Obedience and Behavior Modification |
|
|
Obedience
training gives the owner and dog a way of
communicating and showing the dog where he fits
in the household. We basically are saying to the
dog that you are pet, you are a dog, you are not
a person and you do not have an equal stand in
the house. It gives the dog something to do and
reduces urges to be unruly and destructive. It
calms the dog in general and increases his
attentiveness to his owner-mentally stimulating,
physically active and at the same time, it gives
the owner a way to bond with the dog.
 Modifying
the unwanted behavior is not a ‘Quick Fix’. It
takes work on the owner side too when the dog is
brought home. One of the primary causes of
behavior problems is lack of communication
between the dog and owner. The owner simply does
not know how to correct or tell the dog he is
doing something wrong.
Most
dog behavior problems are dogs’ natural behavior
that the owner simply do not like; for example:
barking, jumping, scavenging, etc. For a dog
owner living in an apartment, barking will be a
problem but if you have an owner staying in a 30
acres land, he may not see it as a problem. In
fact, he may prefer the dog to bark at stranger
driving through his drive way.
At
Real K-9, we do not base our pet obedience
program on competition training but rather
geared toward the needs of the pet owners. We
use obedience as a tool to modify behaviors.
These needs are simple and are based on function
rather than style.

GROUP CLASSES ALSO AVAILABLE!
RM 600 (6-8 SESSIONS) MINIMUM 5 STUDENTS, MAX 8 STUDENTS
This program is laid out in building block style. This means
that you
and your dog will be learning a lot of different exercises and commands
in each of the 6 sessions, but in small sections so that the training
will be fun and fair for the dog and handler.

The aim of this course is to train dogs and handler to a basic
standard of control and obedience. A well behaved dog is the perfect
companion. It is however worth pointing out from the outset ' a dog is only as
good as the handler'. Therefore this course has been designed to impart
as much knowledge as possible to the handlers unlike most obedience
courses
where students are told what to do but not why.
The performance, conditions and standards required to
achieve
graduation are defined below :
Exercise 1 : Obedience on lead - Following directions from instructor
owner and dog will carry out obedience to include
2 left, 2 right, 3
about turns, 3 sits, 2 downs at both fast and normal pace.
Exercise 2 : Sit - Rear end touching the ground
Exercise 3: Down - Four feet and belly touching the ground
Exercise 4 : Stay - Owner will leave the dog in either Sit or Down
position and walk 15 feet away from dog. The dog
must remain
sitting for one minute until release command
is given and three minutes
for down stay
Exercise 5 : Recall ( from free ) - Using a retractable lead
or long
line the owner will recall the dog to themselves; the
dog must sit in
front facing the owner. Once the exercise
is complete the owner may finish with release
command
Exercise 6 : Demonstrate Initial Agility - The owner will tell
the
dog to jump over a 1' hurdle ( twice). Secondly the dog
will be told to
jump onto a 1' high platform (twice).
* height varies from dog to dog

Basic In-Board Course
( 3-5
weeks course – RM1200)
This is a basic control in and around the
house. At the end of three or five weeks, your dog will
do the following on leash; SIT on one command, DOWN on one
command, COME when called, STAY (in a sit or down position)
until released, and HEEL at your side, sitting automatically
when you halt. We also teach your dog how to properly greet
people without jumping up and how to go through doors and
gates under control. To summarize, in board training means:
we do all the hardest work for you, you save time and
frustration, and we are here to help you for free anytime
you need our assistance.
Dogs aged 4 months and up.
This course is a compromise between the
basic on leash course and the full advanced training course
(below). The dog is trained to SIT on one command, DOWN on
one command, COME when called, STAY (in a sit or down
position) until released, and HEEL at your side, sitting
automatically when you halt. However the dog will be trained
to COME when called whether on or off leash under
distractions. We also teach your dog how to properly greet
people without jumping up and how to go through doors and
gates under control. Dogs aged 6 months & up.
Leash Free Advanced
Course
(6 weeks course – RM2500)
This course takes a dog with no obedience
training and offers complete freedom from the leash, and
results in absolute voice control over your dog from a
distance, under all manner distractions, with all of your
commands. For clients who want that extra measure of control
at the beach, hiking swimming, etc. without the leash. The
commands taught are; sit, down, stay, come, heel, off,
properly greeting people, and hour long solid down stays. We
also add an emergency down at a distance, and a “place”.
This keeps him under control and comfortable when company is
over, or if you just need a break! When done all at once,
this course is less time in training, and represents a
savings of RM300 over doing the on & off leash courses
separately. Dogs aged 8 months and up.
Leash Free Advanced
In-Board
(3- 4 weeks course – RM1600)
This course is for a dog who has
previously been through our on leash basic obedience course
or who has had good quality on leash obedience, and is ready
for freedom from the leash. This is a 3 week course and
results in absolute voice control over your dog from a
distance, with all of your commands. For clients who want
that extra measure of control at the beach, hiking swimming,
etc. without having to worry about lines and leashes. The
dog is trained to respond to all commands without the leash.
The commands taught are; sit, down, stay, come, heel, off,
properly greeting people, and hour long solid down stays. We
also add and emergency down at a distance and a “Place”
command so you are able to send your dog to his “place” a
mat or a bed, on command. This keeps him under control and
comfortable when company is over, or if you just need a
break!
